To whom it may concern,
My name is Allison Clark, a senior at Shorewood High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I understand that as of late many cuts have been made to various programs and activities at Dartmouth. Those programs included the swimming and diving teams, both varsity athletics.
I began my swimming career at age 6. It has taught me so much and helped my in my studies and life, in general. I was very disturbed to hear that the administration, in making their decision, did not consult the coaches or team members. As a high school senior, I am weighing various factors for choosing colleges. As a school record holder, MVP, and All-American swimmer, my decision is influenced by the quality, or existence, of the swimming program at the school. What bothers me most is that I'm sure that some of your swimmers did the same and are attending Dartmouth because of both the quality education and quality athletics that are a tradition at your school. Currently, a freshman may have gone to your school, in part, for the swimming program. That swimmer or diver will not be able to compete any more as part of an NCAA team.
I strongly encourage you to reconsider your decision to cut the men's and women's swimming and diving teams. I understand that your school is in financial trouble, mine isn't any better, but everyone should have to make sacrifices, not just a few dozen dedicated men and women who are carrying the weight for everyone. These athletes have dedicated their lives to the sport. Please don't take that away in a moment of financial panic. Please review your actions. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Allison Clark
