It has recently come
to my attention that Dartmouth has chosen to eliminate their swim team because
the athletic department faces a $260,000 annual deficit; the swimming program
reportedly cost $212,000.
As a former Dartmouth student, Class of '62, and an avid swimmer (though not on
the Dartmouth team), I am appalled that you have chosen to take this action.
Surely you can find areas that you can make cuts necessary in other programs and
still keep top a notch swimming program that Dartmouth has always been known
for. You have attracted Olympic gold metal champions like Bob Clotworthy
as top coaches and many wonderful athletes have attended Dartmouth because of
what you have to offer.
While it is the responsibility of the Dartmouth trustees and administration to
set priorities, I believe that it is also the responsibility of the
administration and trustees to recognize widespread interest and support on the
part of the Dartmouth alumni, students, parents and friends for longstanding
programs.
Be assured that I will be following your actions closely. This is but one
more event that causes me to rethink my allegiance to Dartmouth. The
actions of the administration in secrecy and deceit are truly appalling.
