I am truly disappointed by the news of the planned cut
of the Dartmouth Swimming and Diving Team. This is
truly a shortsighted measure to address a historically
consistent fluctuation in the economy and its
resultant effect on the endowment and alumni giving.
It should be considered that during the previous
economic boom generous alumni giving was likely record
breaking. In a manner reflecting Keynesian economic
theory it should also be accepted that these economic
boom times should be used to support times of relative
(and I mean relative) scarcity.

I would also like to include one more point that I
have not seen previously mentioned. When I first moved
to Hanover I was impressed that every Dartmouth
student had to pass a swim test prior to graduation.
It seems absurd that swimming is important enough that
it is the only requirement of every single student
graduating Dartmouth college, yet not important enough
to field a team of dedicated swimmers.

Respectfully,
