- I am truly disappointed by the news of the planned cut
- of the Dartmouth Swimming and Diving Team. This is
- truly a shortsighted measure to address a historically
- consistent fluctuation in the economy and its
- resultant effect on the endowment and alumni giving.
- It should be considered that during the previous
- economic boom generous alumni giving was likely record
- breaking. In a manner reflecting Keynesian economic
- theory it should also be accepted that these economic
- boom times should be used to support times of relative
- (and I mean relative) scarcity.
-
- I would also like to include one more point that I
- have not seen previously mentioned. When I first moved
- to Hanover I was impressed that every Dartmouth
- student had to pass a swim test prior to graduation.
- It seems absurd that swimming is important enough that
- it is the only requirement of every single student
- graduating Dartmouth college, yet not important enough
- to field a team of dedicated swimmers.
-
- Respectfully,
